From how old you need to be to what you'll earn and how to start without experience: the honest guide to working in hospitality in Amsterdam.
Hospitality is the most popular first (part-time) job in the Netherlands, and for good reason. You work with people instead of behind a screen, no two shifts are the same and you build skills you'll use for your whole career: teamwork under pressure, hospitality and working at pace.
It also raises questions. How old do you have to be to work in hospitality? What do you actually earn? And can you start without experience? On this page we answer the questions we get asked most, honestly and without the sales talk.
As a runner, on the buffet or in the cloakroom you're trained on the job.
Hospitality, teamwork and pace, valuable on any CV.
Shifts that fit around your studies or other job.
Cao wages, insurance, holiday pay and daily pay available.
In the Netherlands the law allows light, non-industrial work from age 13, but stricter rules apply to real hospitality work. From 15 you can, for example, help in a kitchen or behind a counter, with limited working hours. From 16 you can wait tables, but not serve alcohol behind the bar: for that you need to be 18. Until you turn 18, late evening shifts also come with limits on working hours.
At EXTRA you can start from age 17. That way we know you can be scheduled on almost every shift and play a full part in the teams at our clients.
Your pay depends on your age, role and experience, and at EXTRA it always follows the collective labour agreement (cao). On top of your basic hourly wage there are often supplements for evening, night and weekend work, exactly the hours when hospitality is busiest. Move up to waiting tables on your own, the bar or the kitchen and your rate goes up with you. And through EXTRA you can choose daily pay: your wages are then in your account the morning after your shift.
Hospitality is one of the few sectors where you can come in at a good level without qualifications or experience. Start as a runner or buffet assistant and learn from experienced colleagues; within a few months you'll be waiting tables on your own. With EXTRA you get an induction on your first shift and you work at venues with high standards, the best training ground there is. Sign up and you can often start the same week.
Employees automatically earn points for every shift worked and every challenge completed. You trade those points in for real rewards.
